Our Story - How it all began
Amaury Gonzalez was born and raised in the small and picturesque city of Cardenas, Matanzas located in northwestern Cuba. His father, Lazaro Gonzalez, instructed him as a baker at the young age of 17. Amaury enjoyed learning from his father. He mastered a variety of strategies for baking different kinds of bread and sweets. When he turned 22, he opened his own business with a friend. Soon, his bakery became a hit in the town. People were placing orders of bread and sweets by the hundreds. After 8 years, his business partner decided to part ways with the bakery.
Amaury had to restart the business from scratch. He bought all the equipment and supplies again. Since he could not find a location, his mother, Maria del Carmen Rodriguez offered her house. Bless his mom! He was able to start again with a small bakery. Business was going well, however, the political situation in Cuba during 2015 was very challenging. Business owners were having a hard time getting the supplies needed for the product process.
Things got worse and holding the business together became impossible. In 2016 Amaury made one of the hardest decisions of his life. He left his beloved country, his family, his business, and everything he knew as home to start a new life in a foreign country.
Amaury moved to the United States on September 16, 2016. He arrived in Chicago, Illinois. Throughout the years he had multiple jobs such as operator in a warehouse, packer in a furniture store, and even a driver. Amaury always believed that he could fulfill his dream of opening his own business in the US. Looking for better job opportunities, he decided to move to North Carolina with a friend.
For 6 years, he saved as much as he could. Nevertheless, he did not know where to start or what to do. After a year in NC, he met who would become his fiancee, Dariela Velasquez, an elementary teacher originally from Honduras. They started dating in 2021. Amaury shared his dream with Dariela. Together they decided to build a partnership and fight together for that dream.
In January 2022, Cuban Sweets LLC was registered in the North Carolina Department of Revenue. Since then, they both worked non-stop until the business was ready to open. After almost a year of looking for the best location, getting all the equipment, and obtaining the licenses and permits; Cuban Sweets Bakery and Coffee was ready to open its doors to the public. Thanks to the support of family, friends and people who believed in our business, Cuban Sweets opened on December 3, 2022.
It is nothing less than a dream come true! We are so fortunate to be able to serve this community! We feel absolutely blessed to be able to provide a little taste of Cuba to all our customers! Cuban Sweets offers a variety of bread, sweets and coffee A lo Cubano!
